Health, Safety and Environmental
The zinc-coating and painting science is a very old one and the related industrial applications are equally old. The progress of medical and scientific knowledge has shown more and more how the products used in the industry’s processes and the associated waste have potentially a very high impact on the health and safety of people, as well as on the environment.
When not carefully managed, zinc-coating treatments and painting processes can, for their nature and the nature of the products used (which are highly toxic or toxic when it comes to chrome and nickel compounds and cyanides; inflammable when it comes to paints) pose a significant risk to both personnel and the local population, as well as to the surrounding environment.
RMP is at high risk from major accident hazards (Italian Legislative Decree No. 334/1999, as amended and supplemented) and is situated in a context which, due to its vicinity to the “Parco del Ticino” natural park, is especially important for the community of Galliate and, more in general, the West Ticino area.
RMP also believes that the necessity to operate in compliance with strict safety standards is a key element in its company policy. At the heart of this belief lies the certainty that people are extremely important resources, whose health and safety must be carefully protected through the creation and maintenance of a safe environment, not only for RMP’s personnel, but also for the people who live in the surrounding area and for customers, as a guarantee of constant quality service and ability to meet quality requirements.
In consideration of the above, RMP’s Management undertakes to:
1) create an integrated Environmental, Safety and Quality System, in compliance with standards UNI EN ISO 14001, Italian Ministerial Decree No. 09/08/2000, BS OHSAS 18001 and UNI CEI 16001, that is shared by the Workers Safety Representative and all the various company levels and is applied by all personnel and all parties with whom RMP interacts;
2) continuously improve the above system, ensuring it is always appropriate to meet the requirements of the company’s real-life scenarios;
3) eliminate or reduce any significant risks and impacts identified during the risks assessment through the programming and verification of planned activities, in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and reference technical legislation.
In particular, in the three years 2011- 2013, RMP undertakes to:
- operate with an aim to reduce, where possible, the use of hazardous substances (replacing them with others that are not hazardous or are less hazardous) and of substances which can generate hazardous waste or emissions, with a special attention to:
- hexavalent chromium and nickel in zinc-coating processes
- organic solvents in painting processes
asking suppliers to contribute to the development and application of technologies that are less polluting, such as:
- vacuum surface treatments (sputtering, PVD)
- water-based painting processes
and directing customers towards the safest, most eco-compatible products with the lowest added environmental cost that RMP can provide
- reduce the consumption of natural resources to the minimum, especially when it comes to water, promoting the use of recovery and recirculation systems, as opposed to resorting to the main water supply
- reduce the production of waste, preferring applications that promote the recovery and reuse of resources and raw materials
- contribute to the development of safety and environmental awareness in all suppliers who work with RMP
- constantly reduce energy consumption, promoting the development of processes which use the energy produced by renewable sources
- improve the system employed for the identification and control of crucial parameters in terms of major accident hazards
- circulate this policy and the programmes for the continual improvement of prevention, protection and environmental measures, as well as the results obtained to all RMP personnel and to any entities, undertakings and customers who ask to view them.
Decorative surface treatments are often regarded as highly critical processes, as they can be affected by many variables and, when production cycles are not managed correctly, can generate very high waste percentages.
Nowadays, customers are increasingly demanding when it comes to product quality and, most of all, to the service offered, and are no longer prepared to accept any inefficiencies caused by the supplier’s process, nor any delays in respect of agreed delivery dates. In order to respond effectively to growing market demands, RMP must manage its organisation in a way designed to minimise inefficiencies and eliminate the costs associated with them. RMP must also keep in mind at all times that quality does not improve by checking and rejecting non-conforming products but by implementing effective process control and that high quality and high efficiency are not in contrast with each other. Production output must be measured both in terms of quantity and quality and the responsibility of the achievement of the goals set lies with the entire organisation, with no exceptions.
In consideration of the above, RMP management undertakes to:
1) maintain a Quality Management System that complies with UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 and that is shared by all company levels and is applied by all personnel and by all parties who interact with RMP;
2) continuously improve the system, ensuring it is always appropriate to meet the requirements of the company’s real-life scenarios;
3) continuously improve its production processes, choosing prevention and lean production techniques;
4) ensure constant and steady results throughout the duration of each process;
5) plan quality improvements actions in a continuous and systematic manner.
In particular, in the period 2011- 2015, RMP undertakes to:
- develop a Quality System that complies with standard UNI ISO/TS 16949, so as to respond in a more effective manner to the requirements of customers in the automotive industry;
- for each production line, start and maintain an improvement programme based on lean production principles;
- improve its company management IT system, so as to make the flow of information among the various operating levels faster and more efficient;
- achieve and maintain a percentage of punctuality in order delivery in excess of 95%;
- maintain the overall value of debits and credits to the customer below 3%;
- replace old plants with new up-to-date ones;
- install new surface treatments plants to complement traditional processes (sputtering, PVD)
- circulate this policy, continual improvement programmes and the results obtained to all RMP personnel and to any entities, undertakings and customers who ask to view them.
